Ask any photographer when the best time to photograph a garden is and you’ll be told that it’s either at the crack of dawn or just before dusk. But what do you do when you only have access to a garden in the midday sun? And just to complicate matters further, it’s the middle of August, when the garden had arguably looked its best two months earlier? Should you throw in the towel and admit defeat? No, of course not. I gladly accepted the challenge and played the hand I’d been dealt. After all, it’s not every day I get the chance to photograph a young garden shaped in part by a renowned designer (Tom Stuart-Smith). And as you’ll hopefully see, there was still plenty to work with – harsh lighting notwithstanding!
