Harewood House, UK
Is bigger better? Well, gardens on a grand scale – such as those at Harewood House – certainly do give the photographer a lot of scope. Not only do you get a beautiful stately home situated in rolling hills and an 18th Century landscape designed by Capability Brown but you also get a 19th Century parterre with 20th Century sculpture. And while it may be big, it always feels perfectly proportioned – perhaps because amongst the sweeping vistas there’s always a quiet corner to which you can escape and lose yourself. Of course there are trees, topiary and lots of traditional English herbaceous planting, but there are also surprises along the way like an authentic Bhutanese stupa in the Himalayan Garden. You might even say that Harewood House is one of those gardens that promises much and doesn’t disappoint in its ability to deliver.
