Helmsley Walled Garden, UK
Colour is so important in gardens, particularly in a cool, wet and windy July. Here in Yorkshire, skies can be grey and dreary for days on end. Not for me oh-so-tasteful mauves, lavenders and pale pinks. Which is why I warmed instantly to Helmsley’s Walled Garden. It’s colourful and joyous. There’s a real buzz about the place as teams of volunteers tend to the deep herbaceous borders and catch up with visitors, locals and regulars. It’s the kind of community garden that leaves you feeling more upbeat and with a spring in your step for having visited it.
