A Historic Treasure with a Modern Twist

Caring for a historic, nationally important garden must be something of a double-edged sword. Of course, it's a privilege to have such a close, daily connection with a living landmark. On the other hand, it must be a never-ending cause of anxiety. Especially when there are miles of box hedging involved and the dreaded box tree caterpillar is determined to make itself at home. The mother and daughter team responsible for this Asturian gem seem to take it all in their stride, maintaining a French-inspired formal parterre laid out by a 19th century ancestor while also finding time to create a second garden to one side filled with quirky plant combinations, flowing lines and a sense of joy at being able to bring a family tradition of garden making into the 21st century. A garden of two halves, but a singular triumph.
